Field Trips & School Visits
Lombard Historical Society staff is qualified and prepared to conduct field trips and school visits for grades 3 through 12 on subjects including Lombard History, Black History and the Underground Railroad.
Students will learn how national history plays out on the local level. Lombard has a rich history connected to Westward Expansion, the Civil War, Women’s Suffrage, and more. Each program meets several Illinois State Learning Standards.
Field trips start at $3 per student for Lombard Schools & Home Schoolers, and $5 for non-Lombard schools & Home Schoolers. Field Trips are offered at the Historical Society, Virtually, or as Museum-to-Your classroom visits.

Elementary Schools
Lombard: Then & Now
Learn about Lombard of the past and compare it to Lombard of today and learn about how the earliest European settlers lived. This program includes making butter and more. Students will also see photos and clothing from the past.
This program is offered for First Grade
Local Lombard
Lombard has a rich history to be proud of. Learn about the people who helped build and impacted Lombard to make it a vibrant community today. Offerings include tours of the Lombard Cemetery on Main Street where many community founders are buried to talk about the people of the past, or walking tours of Downtown to learn about how buildings have changed throughout the year.
This program is offered for Second Grade.
Moving West
Lombard used to be the Western Frontier. Pioneers like Sheldon Peck and the Babcock Brothers traveled from the East Coast and settled this land. This field trip includes making rope and learning about the relationship between farming and transportation. This field trip focuses on life as a pioneer.

Museum Mystery Artifacts
Working in a Museum sometimes requires detective work. Objects are donated to our museum and frequently we do not know what they are. Learn about working in a museum and the objects of the past with this fun field trip. Students will see real artifacts from the collection. This a 30 min activity.
This field trip is offered for Third Grade
Moving Around Town
Today we have GPS and Google Maps to guide us, but in the past, people relied on paper Maps. In this activity, students will be given a map and tokens for several Lombard Landmarks. Students will learn how to plot the landmarks on the map and how to create routes using the maps.
This field trip is offered for Third Grade.
It is recommended to combine the Mystery Artifacts and Moving Around Town in one visit
From Ellis Island to Lombard
Lombard is a town of Immigrants. Many immigrants came through Ellis Island which was the end of a long and difficult journey. And, the process of getting through to immigration officials was the final hurdle. Many passed through Immigration successfully but many were rejected and had to return to their home country. In this activity, students will be assigned a person and learn about the immigration standards of the past, and see if they would have made it into America or not.

Seeking Old Charley: Sheldon Peck & the Underground Railroad
The Sheldon Peck Homestead is part of the National Park Service Network to Freedom. This recognizes the people and location of verified Underground Railroad Stations, meaning that there is physical or written proof that the site was indeed used as a waystation for freedom seekers. Students will learn about Sheldon Peck, Old Charley, and other abolitionists in Northern Illinois. Students will hear about the life of real Freedom Seeker Old Charley and what his life was like.
This field trip is offered for Fourth and Fifth Grade.
Documentary Trilogy
The Lombard Historical Society and Tim Frakes Production, INC. have produced a documentary trilogy on Lombard History. These are appropriate for students in Middle and High School.
The video trilogy provides a better understanding of our shared past, as well as inspiration to address challenging circumstances in our own time with the courage and ingenuity displayed by those who came before us.
Documentaries are available for free - see below. Physical Copies can be rented for $2 per DVD for 1 week or purchased for $20.

Sheldon Peck Art & Essay Contest
The Sheldon Peck Art & Essay Contest is open to public and private schools and homeschools. Students in any grade in a Lombard, Glen Ellyn, Addison, Elmhurst or Villa Park Elementary, Middle, or High School are invited to enter the 2022 Lombard Historical Society Sheldon Peck Art & Essay Contest. Prizes for winners.
Contestants will have the option of creating either an original journal entry or a work of art, inspired by the work of Sheldon Peck as their submission.
