CELEBRATING A CULTURAL ICON

We are excited to announce the “Annie”-Versary that celebrates the legacy of the beloved cartoon character Little Orphan Annie and honors Harold Gray the creative genius behind it.

Whether you remember her for her indomitable spirit, moral compass, or fiery red curls, Little Orphan Annie remains an important icon in American culture 100 years after the character’s debut in the namesake comic strip.

Affectionately dubbed the “Annie-Versary,” the Lombard Historical Society (LHS), Village of Lombard, and the DuPage Convention & Visitors Bureau (DCVB) are excited about a series of events that will run from April 27 through December 23, 2024, commemorating Little Orphan Annie’s enduring legacy and paying tribute to Harold Gray, the creative genius who brought her to life.

Leapin Lizards! A Hundred Years of Little Orphan Annie Exhibition

Leapin Lizards! A Hundred Years of Little Orphan Annie is a captivating exhibition inviting you to delve into the enchanting world of one of the most iconic and enduring comic strips ever. This exhibition, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Little Orphan Annie and honoring its creator, Harold Gray, is a tribute to the enduring power of storytelling, the magic of comic art, and the nostalgia of a bygone era.

Open to the Public: April 27, 2024-December 23, 2024

The Museum and Exhibition has a suggested $5 donation at admission.


Radio Orphan Annie’s Secret Society

To celebrate her milestone birthday, Annie, Sandy, and her friend Joe Corntassel have crafted an exciting adventure in her hometown of Lombard! From July 12- August 31, 2024, just like her thrilling radio adventures in the 1930s and '40s, you can join her secret society and decode messages hidden around Lombard. Best of all, there are fantastic prizes to win – and who knows, you might just walk away with a can of good-for-ya Ovaltine!

Week-long “Annie”-Versary Birthday Party Celebration presented by LHS

Tuesday, July 30 – Art @ The Peck

Join us at Sheldon Peck Homestead at 1:00 PM for a creative adventure! Make your own decoder and find clues around the museum. Decode the message and win a prize.

Wednesday, July 31 – Movie @ Lilacia Park

Gather at Lilacia Park for a screening of the 1982 classic Annie. The movie starts at sunset (around 8:30 PM). Bring a blanket, some snacks, and your family for an evening of fun under the stars. In partnership with the Lombard Park District. Note: Inclement weather before or during the event may cause cancellation.

Friday, August 2 – Music on Maple Street @ 7:00 PM

Enjoy a musical evening with Angela James! Her rich, crooning voice is inspired by singers from her upbringing in Tennessee. Her style is reminiscent of artists like Hazel Dickens and Neko Case. Join us for a delightful night of music on Maple Street.

Saturday, August 3 – Annie's Birthday Bash @ Noon

Celebrate the grand finale of Little Orphan Annie's Birthday Week at 23 W Maple Street with a fun-filled day starting at noon. Enjoy Annie-themed activities, face painting, and a slice of birthday cake. The West Suburban Humane Society will also join us with adorable furry friends available for adoption. And of course, the day wouldn’t be complete without appearances by Annie and Daddy Warbucks!
