THE PROJECT & TIMELINE

THE GRANT

in November 2020, LHS received a $750,000 Illinois Public Museum Capital Grant to be used to expand and upgrade the Carriage House at 23 West Maple Street. The funds will be used to update the archive and provide more storage for the collections as well as new offices for staff and volunteers, a new gift shop space, modifications for ADA accessibility, and a new kitchen space for Society events.

The grant was made available through the Illinois Public Museum Capital Grants Program, funded through Gov. JB Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois multi-year state capital program.

Our public museums help tell the story of Illinois, from the founding and cultural heritage of local communities to our place in the world today. This grant program is making investments in local museums that will allow them to attract more visitors, foster important research, and tell important stories for generations to come - Gov. JB Pritzker.

THE PROJECT & TIMELINE

In November 2022, LHS staff moved into the newly renovated Carriage House. The building includes new flex space, a dedicated gift shop space, program space, and a lift making the building fully ADA accessible.

The total construction cost came in at just over $796,000, leaving LHS with a little fundraising to do. The good news is that we have already raised half of the additional construction cost. But we have a bit of work to do. We hope that you will support our efforts and help us reach our total goal of 83,570.52. To help support our efforts click here.

The enlarged and enhanced Carriage House will be a key downtown community hub in a centralized location, offering unique resources and assistance to Lombard residents and visitors through the archive and collections, educational presentations and exposure to artifacts for grades K-12 students, engaging speakers on timely topics and recreational activities including concerts, themed house tours and cemetery events.

Flint Architects of Lombard has been selected to design the addition to the Carriage House.

READY TO HELP?

You might be thinking that $750,000 is a lot of money…and, you’re right. It is a very large sum of money. Unfortunately, because of the rising costs of construction materials, the actual cost of the proposed expansion is going to cost more than the original project grant proceeds, $100,000 more, in fact. Learn how you can help.
